Welding Flux Meaning. Weld flux is a chemical purifying agent flowing agent or cleaning agent. Also known as manual metal arc welding MMA or MMAW flux shielded arc welding or stick welding is a process where the arc is struck between the metal rod electrode flux coated and the work piece both the rod and work piece surface melt to form a weld pool.
Inside the flux core welder is a spool of wire containing flux core welding wire. In Submerged Arc Welding SAW the granular flux provides a blanket over the weld which protects against sparks and spatter. The gases produced push the atmospheric gas back preventing oxidation and reactions with nitrogen.

When the heat of the weld zone reaches the flux the flux melts and outgasses. The flux of the welding wire increases the durability and the longevity of the weld. The addition of a flux material eliminates the need to connect an inert gas to the welding machine. Click here to see our latest technical engineering podcasts on YouTube.
