Welding Of Cast Iron. WelddotcomIn this episode we take a look at welding Cast Iron. In most cases welding on cast iron involves repairs to castings not joining casting to other members.
Welding-cast-iron deals with classes known as Gray Malleable and Nodular or Ductile according to typical appearance of their microstructure which affects their properties. Experts suggest using a 55 nickel rod. Flux cored wires nickel-iron and nickel-iron-manganese wires are also available for welding cast irons.
This welding rod can make the iron soft and machinable and can minimize cracking.
In most cases welding on cast iron involves repairs to castings not joining casting to other members. The welding of cast-iron may be performed with or without preheating. The mix of nickel and iron has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion which lowers welding stresses and makes it less prone to cracking. When arc welding with the cast iron electrodes ECI preheat to between 250 and 800F 121 and 425C depending on the size and complexity of the casting and the need to machine the deposit and adjacent areas.
